2. May Help Lower Cholesterol

High blood cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease, the leading cause of death in the world. Interestingly, polyphenols may help lower cholesterol, thus reducing the risk of heart disease.

One study found that a polyphenol-rich diet significantly reduced triglycerides and “bad” very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol in overweight and obese people. In particular, cocoa polyphenols are very effective at reducing “bad” LDL cholesterol, all while increasing “good” HDL cholesterol.

Other polyphenol-rich foods, such as olive oil and green tea, also appear to have similar beneficial effects. What’s more, one large study of over 1,200 people showed that eating polyphenol-rich berries could also lower “bad” LDL cholesterol.

Strong evidence shows that polyphenol-rich diets and foods, such as berries and olive oil, can lower “bad” cholesterol and increase “good” cholesterol.
